FOSDA APPOINTED AS A MEMBER OF THE REGIONAL ELECTION RESPONSE GROUP
FOSDA has been appointed as a member of the Regional Election Response Group (RERG) established by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) to ensure Peaceful conduct of the upcoming 2020 elections in Ghana. The establishment of the RERG is a key component of WANEP’s Electoral Violence Monitoring Analysis and Mitigation (EMAM) being implemented in collaboration with the National Peace Council, Civil Society Organisations and other key stakeholders.
FOSDA is representing Civil Society Southern Sector RERG. The southern sector is the known as Cluster 3 comprising the Volta, Easter, Oti, Greater Accra and Central Regions of Ghana.
At the launch of the Cluster 3 RERG on Monday October 5 at Ho, the Volta Regional Minister Mr. Archibald Yao Letsa lauded the idea for the formation of the group given the importance of peace before, during and after the elections. He encouraged all stakeholders to work together to achieve peace and pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council of the Volta Region. The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Edward Oduro Kwarteng , on his part emphasised that elections everywhere are competitive, but should not be a life and death matter. He assured the general public that the Police is ready as a key stakeholder to ensure that the upcoming elections in Ghana are held in a peaceful environment devoid of threats and violence. He urged all stakeholders to work collectively to consolidate Ghana’s Democratic gains.
The RERG of Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 have already been Launched in Tamale and Kumasi respectively. Cluster 1 comprises of Ashanti, Bono Ahafo, Western and Western North Regions. Whilst Cluster 2 is composed of Northern, Upper East, Upper West, North East and the Savannah regions of Ghana. These Clusters will all be coordinated by the National Election Response Group (NERG), which was first launched in Accra Wednesday 23rd September 2020.
